About me

 

I'm an independent journalist and consultant, with work featured in The New York Times, The Nation, NPR, BBC, PRI's The World, among other outlets. I also provide communications and operational consulting on several projects, including the LIFE (Livelihoods Innovation Through Food Entrepreneurship) Project.

In 2015, I became the first James Foley Middle East Reporting Fellow with The GroundTruth Project, in honor of Jim Foley, the first journalist slain by ISIS in Syria. That fellowship helped launch my special project, Savoring Syria, which explores my own Syrian identity and tells intimate stories of Syrians who have fled from war through the lens of food. The interactive story-telling project has also included tested recipes and dining events. In 2016 and 2017, I received grants from the International Women's Media Foundation and the Hollings Center to continue that reporting.

A passionate cook and avid reader, I enjoy my time outside of work experimenting in the kitchen, devouring all things literary, tending my balcony vegetable and herb garden, and spending time with my loved ones.

Prior to moving to Washington, DC in April 2018, I was based in Istanbul since November 2011. There, I reported on Turkish politics and society, the refugee crisis throughout the region, maternal health in Ethiopia, environment and development in Myanmar, and more.
